Get the Most Out of Your Storage Unit

Packing efficiently helps protect your belongings, saves space, and makes it easier to find what you need later. Here are some practical packing tips to help you store with confidence.

1. Prepare the Unit Floor for Better Circulation

Place pallets or a grid of 2' x 3' on the floor before moving items in. This simple step allows air to circulate beneath your goods, reducing the chance of moisture buildup.

Tip: Leave a clear aisle or walkway through the center of your unit so you can easily access items stored in the back.

2. Pack Boxes Fully and Securely

Fill boxes to their maximum capacity so they don’t collapse or tip over. Avoid overstuffing—bulging boxes are more likely to shift and cause damage.

Tip: Stack heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top for stability.

3. Label Everything Clearly

Use large, easy-to-read labels on every carton, box, and bin. Labeling saves time when you need to retrieve specific items later and prevents accidental damage from moving the wrong box.

Tip: Mark fragile boxes and keep them on top.

4. Pack Books Flat and Use Smaller Boxes

Books should be packed flat to protect their spines. Use multiple smaller boxes instead of large, heavy cartons—this makes them easier and safer to lift and stack.

Tip: Stack heavier boxes under lighter ones to maintain balance.

5. Protect Fragile Dishes and Glassware

Wrap each dish, glass, and bowl individually using blank newsprint paper or foam wrap. Nest cups and bowls together, stack plates vertically, and fill air pockets with cushioning materials.

Tip: Never stack other boxes on top of fragile dishware.

6. Store Glass on Its Edge, Not Flat

Mirrors, glass tabletops, and framed artwork should be wrapped well and stored upright. Storing glass flat can increase the risk of breakage.

Tip: Add corner protectors for extra security.

7. Handle Lamps and Lampshades With Care

Lampshades should be wrapped individually with blank newsprint. Inked newspaper can transfer stains, so avoid using it on delicate fabrics or surfaces.

Tip: Pack lamp bases separately and pad them well.

8. Protect Furniture and Upholstery

Stand sofas and mattresses on one end to save space. Disassemble tables and bed frames, wrapping legs and hardware. Keep upholstery off the floor using pallets or plastic protectors, and cover with light plastic dust covers to prevent dirt and moisture damage.

Tip: Keep screws, bolts, and small parts together in a labeled bag.

9. Clean Appliances Thoroughly Before Storage

Refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, and other appliances should be cleaned and dried completely before storing.

  • Defrost and Dry Refrigerators and Freezers
  • Drain Washing Machines Fully
  • Remove Appliance Doors and Store Separately
  • Place Desiccants Inside to Absorb Moisture

Tip: Check appliances periodically during storage.

10. Use Protective Materials Wisely

Investing in good packing materials can save you from costly damage.

  • Use Blank Newsprint, Foam Wrap, Moving Blankets, or Bubble Wrap
  • Avoid Using Trash Bags—They Trap Moisture
  • Use Moving Straps or Bungee Cords to Secure Taller Stacks

Tip: Good packing materials are a small cost compared to replacing damaged items.

11. Keep Frequently Used Items Near the Front

If you’re storing items you may need to access from time to time—like tools, seasonal decorations, or business supplies—store them near the front of the unit. This helps you get in and out quickly without unpacking everything.

Tip: Make a quick inventory list of what’s inside each box and where it’s placed.

12. Don’t Forget Climate Considerations

If you’re storing delicate items like wood furniture, electronics, or fabrics, consider extra protective measures like covering with breathable materials, using silica packs, or elevating boxes to avoid temperature fluctuations.

Tip: Even in dry storage, a little extra protection goes a long way.
